Careers

At Carshalton Boys Sports College we recognise the importance of high quality impartial Careers Advice and Guidance and employ a qualified independent Careers Adviser who works with students and parents throughout their time in the school and Sixth Form.  We recognise that the world of work is rapidly changing and that the need for young people to be equipped with transferable skills, knowledge and interpersonal skills to manage their career journeys successfully has never been more important.

Careers education and guidance is a key entitlement to all students. With clear goals and focus, students are often motivated to achieve their best outcome.

Independent Careers Advice:

The school employs an external Independent adviser to complement other careers provision.  Ethney McCulloch from Prospects is available at the school every Thursday, based in H33.

In key year groups priority careers interviews will be arranged, but any student can request an interview through Suzanne Barker, PSO for 6th Form. Parents are welcome to attend appointments by arrangement and careers action plans will be sent home to parents and students for reference.

In September of each year, Year 11 and 13 are prioritised for next step interviews. Students are targeted based on clear identification of need and support requirements. Student progress in securing “next steps” are monitored regularly, and ongoing intervention is in place based on information obtained.

Careers Education and Guidance in Key Stage 5:

Students receive advice and guidance on potential careers through the Tutor programme, career events and individual support and mentoring by members of the 6th Form & Careers Team.  Students are supported with UCAS statements, applications for apprenticeships or other employment, as well as accessing the Prospects Adviser.

Further details of our UCAS programme can be found by clicking here.

Further details of our Job Seekers programme can be found by clicking here.

Careers Education and Guidance in Key Stage 4:

The data collected from surveys, combined with information about proposed destinations obtained from all students, results in a clear picture about post 16 intentions for Year 11. The data collected about our students means that we can support students in a highly personalised way.

In the Year 11 Parents Information Evening in September of each year, the post 16 options available are discussed. In the Sutton Borough applications for 6th Forms and Colleges are advised before December, we work to ensure students have made applications prior to that date. Group and individual support will be implemented as required.

Careers Education and Guidance in Key Stage 3:

Key Stage 3 focuses on building curiosity, understanding and skills.

This foundation is extended in Year 8 as students embark on their options process. Our goal is for all students to make informed and realistic options choices.

  • Surveys will capture vital student aspiration data which is used to inform personalised aim higher and career workshop programmes (e.g. medical, engineering)
