    Enrichment & Super Curricular

    Going beyond the syllabus

A-level and Level 3 courses set the floor, not the ceiling. The students who thrive at university, in competitive apprenticeships, and in demanding careers are the ones who've gone beyond their specification — read further, questioned more, and built genuine intellectual interests rather than just exam technique. Our Enrichment and Super-Curricular programme exists to make that happen for every student, not just the ones who'd find their own way there.

    Timetabled, not optional extra

Every Year 12 student has three timetabled Academic Enrichment lessons per fortnight — dedicated curriculum time for building super-curricular experience beyond the exam specification. This isn't unstructured free study: students are guided in how to engage meaningfully with their subject beyond the classroom, and every activity is logged on Unifrog, building a genuine, evidenced record of intellectual engagement rather than a last-minute personal statement scramble.

A structured sequence, not a scattering of activities

Enrichment at CBSC isn't a loose collection of one-off opportunities. Every Year 12 student follows a compulsory, 14-session Post-18 Aspire sequence, delivered fortnightly alongside timetabled Academic Enrichment, building deliberately from foundational skills through to a genuine, competitive application:

    • Foundations first —  school systems, professional communication, and learning to use Unifrog to log super-curricular activity properly from day one.

    • Understanding the landscape —  university finance and student loans, and a genuine grounding in career pathways and the labour market, so choices are informed rather than assumed.

    • Real-world experience —  preparation for in-person work experience, and Springpod virtual placements for students exploring fields not easily accessible locally.

    • Direct academic exposure —  Springpod Subject Spotlights, connecting students with university academics in their subject of interest.

    • Building the application —  personal statement structure and content, and a high-quality CV, adapted and refined against real job descriptions and specifications.

    • Closing the loop —  a Year 12 review and goal-setting session that feeds directly into Year 13, so the sequence has a genuine beginning and end rather than fading out after October.

For Year 13 students not pursuing university, a parallel Post-18 Aspire strand runs alongside — covering apprenticeship and direct employment applications, assessment centres, salary and benefits comparison, and interview preparation — so every student has a structured, staffed pathway, not just the ones applying through UCAS.

    Building genuine subject engagement

    • University Research from the start.  Students are introduced early to Unifrog and UCAS Explorer, learning how to research courses, universities and opportunities properly — not just by reputation, but by genuine fit.

    • The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).  Available to students from February of Year 12, supported by a weekly timetabled session with our EPQ Coordinator and ongoing individual mentoring — giving students a genuine, independent research project to sit alongside their main qualifications.

    • Oxford, Oxbridge and Medicine preparation.  A bespoke strand for students considering the most competitive courses, alongside coordinated support for UCAT, LNAT, TSA and MAT admissions tests — identified early, with individual support plans put in place. Further bespoke support is available for other specific aspirations, including Pre-Sport, Pre-Media and Pre-Business pathways.

    • Aspire Tutor Group.  A structured stretch programme for our highest-attaining Year 12 and 13 students, running as focused daily sessions over several weeks, covering advanced UCAS preparation, academic stretch and aspiration-building alongside their standard tutor group experience.

Making sure every student gets there

Ambition at CBSC isn't reserved for students who already have the confidence, contacts or family knowledge to seek opportunities out independently. Where a student is identified as disadvantaged, we provide individual support to remove practical barriers to open days, work experience and competitive applications — so genuine equity of ambition sits alongside genuine equity of outcome.

    Widening horizons beyond the classroom

    • Futures Friday,  a regular fixture giving structured time to careers and future planning throughout the year.

    • UCAS Convention,  attended by the whole of Year 12, alongside university-led personal statement workshops.

    • Directions & Destinations,  our whole-school careers exhibition, giving every student — whatever their intended pathway — the chance to explore university, apprenticeship, employment and armed services routes side by side.

    • Aim Higher, Camps International and further education partnerships,  including trips and external partnerships that expose students to environments and opportunities beyond their day-to-day experience.

Enrichment for every interest, not just the academic

Twice a fortnight, all Year 12 and Year 13 students take part in a dedicated enrichment programme reaching well beyond the classroom. Alongside academic mentoring, students choose from sport, the arts, and hands-on creative pursuits — including football, wider sport and fitness programmes, art and textiles, drama, music and media production, and food studies — with further bespoke activities added in response to student requests. On top of this, a strong voluntary offer gives students access to sports clubs and teams, a Healthy Living Unit, and further academic stretch and challenge opportunities for those who want more.

    Why it matters

None of this is about padding a personal statement — it's about building the genuine intellectual curiosity and breadth of experience that sustains students through a demanding degree, apprenticeship or career, and gives them something authentic to say about who they are and why they want it. By making this a timetabled, sequenced and tracked part of the Sixth Form experience, we make sure it's a guarantee for every student, not a matter of luck or initiative.
