Carshalton Boys is a school community built on positive relationships and a culture of kindness and mutual respect. We believe that looking after our students, on their journey from childhood to young adulthood, is a privilege and a responsibility we take seriously. Staff are united in their optimism and belief in our young people, and are committed to keeping our community's most vulnerable members safe — including making sure students always have a way to raise a welfare concern, in confidence, with a trusted adult.

Our approach to behaviour is rooted in our WE BELIEVE principles, which run through every part of school life:

Every student has the right to learn in a calm, safe and supportive environment, free from harm and disruption. We expect consistently high levels of respect for others, we celebrate what we have in common, we value and nurture difference, and bullying, harassment and violence are never tolerated.

Our systems are built around recognising and encouraging the behaviour we want to see, and staff are expected to model this themselves. Positive behaviour is celebrated through, for example:

• verbal praise and phone calls home;
• WE BELIEVE postcards, badges and certificates; and
• rewards assemblies and reward activities or trips.

Rewards and sanctions are discussed regularly with students, including through the student council, to make sure our systems feel fair and are working as intended.

We expect high standards of conduct wherever students are representing CBSC:

In classrooms

Behaviour that supports learning for everyone; calm, orderly transitions; and active engagement in lessons.

In corridors and social spaces

Keeping our environment clean and safe, and moving calmly around the site.

Travelling to and from school

Acting as ambassadors for the school, showing consideration for our neighbours and other passengers.

Online

Treating others with the same respect and kindness expected on site; online bullying or harassment affecting the school community will be addressed in the same way as it would be on school grounds.

Mobile phones

CBSC operates an ‘Off and Away’ mobile phone policy, in line with Department for Education guidance. Phones and smart devices must be switched off and kept out of sight during the school day, with only very limited exceptions (for example, agreed medical needs). This is designed to protect learning time, reduce disruption, and support students' wellbeing and focus.

Behaviour incidents are addressed proportionately and consistently, using a graduated set of responses that reflect the seriousness and pattern of the behaviour — ranging from a verbal reminder or reflection task, through to detentions, internal suspension, or, in the most serious cases, suspension or permanent exclusion. Any decision to suspend or permanently exclude a student is taken only by the Principal or a delegated member of the leadership team, and parents/carers are always contacted as part of this process.

Where a student returns to school after a suspension, a reintegration meeting takes place to revisit expectations and agree an action plan to support them going forward.

We recognise that some students need additional support to meet our behaviour expectations. Behaviour data is monitored regularly so that we can identify students who may benefit from extra help, and put support in place such as mentoring, a modified timetable, or access to our in-house pastoral provision, The Bridge.

Students with additional needs on the SEND register have an Individual Education Plan, which anticipates likely triggers for misbehaviour and sets out strategies to prevent them — for example, movement breaks, adjusted seating, or modified uniform requirements — and staff working with these students are expected to know and apply these strategies.

We know that a strong partnership between home and school benefits every student. Parents/carers are invited to information evenings at the start of each year to hear about our values, expectations and behaviour systems, and can view their child's logged behaviour at any time via MCAS. Any concerns about a student's behaviour can be raised with our pastoral team, or in person with a Principal during our open morning drop-in.
